Ravenswood 2002 Monte Rosso Zinfandel
(over 2 years ago)I must admit, I am a fan of Ravenswood Zins and when I made my way to their tasting room this past Sunday in Sonoma I knew there would be a few superb wines on the horizon to taste and enjoy. The 2002 Monte Rosso Zinfandel was full of fragrance, the nose was spectacular...the Ravenswood rep who poured described the wine perfectly and I'll share some notes I took as she described what my taste buds experienced...the wine exuded aromas of sweet black cherry, raspberry, vanilla, spice with a slight hint of orange blossom with fine tannins woven throughout the wine. It was silky smooth without question not extremely overpowering, it was quite a mouthful to be honest and the finish had an impressive chocolaty ripeness. Sadly, I understand this is the last year for this great big Zin from the famous Monte Rosso vineyard, so I suggest making your way to the vineyard in Sonoma, California, for this wine is only available at the winery!
Ravenswood 2002 Monte Rosso Zinfandel
(about 1 year ago)I gave this wine an hour in the decanter to shape up, and it didn't. Disappointing for the winery and vineyard, this wine is closed on the nose and fairly astringent, but with a bit of coaxing shows some briary blackberry fruit and sage. Fruit definitely takes a backseat to the tannins here. Give it a shot with fatty foods, but it's unlikely laying it down will fix the drying tannins before the fruit fades. As of this writing it's been in the bottle 2 1/2 years.
