2005 Château Poitevin Cru Bourgeois Medoc
(2009-12-11 23:14:42 UTC)2 hour decant. Color: Deep ruby, clear. Nose: Complex nose of red and black plums, black cherries, mixed florals, pepper and a whiff of smoky oak. You can also smell that earthy, clay-like medoc influence. On the palate: Medium to full-bodied, the initial fruit is ripe and extracted, with a quick transition to a midpalate that is quite spicy for a Merlot/Cab blend. Aha! Some PV in the mix! (see below) Very earthy too, and I suspect the clay/gravel soils common in Medoc. There's a lot of black pepper, cedar box, and a fair amount of oak influence here (not over the top). Blackcurrants are strong throughout. Acidity is pretty lively, and the wine 'goes green/vegetal' at the tail end of the midpalate, and then transitions into a long finish with a lot of firm tannins and plummy fruit. A big boy, certainly it's best days are yet to come (I'm guessing 2011-15), but this became pretty approachable now after a couple of hours decanting. 90 points. (55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet (Franc/Sauv not specified), 5% Petit Verdot). Pairing recommendation: Beef, or better yet lamb. The wine is kind of 'brooding', and thus lends itself to heavier fare.

(2008-11-30 21:03:11 UTC)Classic Bordeaux with a splash of new world crunch.
VERY elegant nose of wet wood and blueberries. Medium to full body, stewed black fruit on the palate. Rock-solid tannins covered by a thin shell of delicate fruit. Sweet but subtle vanilla oak holding everything together.
This is an incredible deal at 15 bucks. Tannins were finely in tact after 3 days. Could easily age for 10 years.
