Torbreck 2003 Steading
(over 2 years ago)worthy of the rare five star Fuckingwow! rating. Had on thanksgiving with homemade cassoulet (Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook recipe), fingerlings roasted in duckfat, and creamed kale. Up-front blackberries-and-cream attack. Then you smell the violets like a good Rhonie. Then you get into the layers, tobbacco and loam. $28.95 at the San Diego wine company. If they have any more, I'm coming home with a half-case to get me through the brutal San Diego winter (all 6 days of it).

(about 1 year ago)I had the privilege of sampling the 2000 vintage of this wine in London. When I came home, I searched all over to find a shop that carried it. I just purchased a few bottles of the 2003 vintage. It's wonderful. Berry, fig and spice round out a fine wine in the burgundy tradition.

(about 1 year ago)This wine is an interesting blend that is more Rhone in style than Aussie. The nose took a few minutes to develop. Decanting might be a good idea here. Once it opened up there was a floral component I didn't expect with some blueberry & vanilla. The palate was spicy with black pepper and typical Aussie fruit components. There is a wood aspect to the wine that is closer to a cedar than anything else. I can sense that Bacon flavor wanting to come out... but its hidden in the back of the bus. This wine comes right at you. While I have seen some outstanding scores for this wine my tasting profile thinks it is less exceptional. I would try this wine again. You decanter is your friend... Make sure you let this wine have it's best showing. That said its a cool blend if you have wine friends it might be worth opening jus to talk about it. BTW I hate wax caps... so Torbreck if you can get those outta here that would be great.

(about 1 year ago)Really full body rhone style wine. Spicy like rhone wines but more extracted and full bodied, with also a sweeter side (more residual sugar?). Ripe fruit, jammy, a little coca-cola taste to it. Some earth, fruit and dried figs in the finish. You can definitely tell that it's new world.
Torbreck 2003 Steading
(about 1 year ago)Chateauneuf-du-Pape-style blend (right down to the embossed bottle). Medium-full bodied, with big blackberry and blueberry fruit, dense, penetrating earth, and a faint suggestion of garrigue. New-world bigness meets old-world flavors.
