Lazzeretti 2001 Brunello di Montalcino
(over 2 years ago)This is a double 94-point wine from Wine Spectator & Steven Tanzer. We had this wine at a 15-bottle 2001 Brunello tasting in San Diego and it placed #2 behind the 2001 Fossecolle. The color is a full, clear bright ruby red. Closed nose at first opening to ripe crushed field berries, hints of violets and an underlying minerality. During the evening the nose improved with secondary scents (such as smoke and strawberries). Taste is all Sangiovese from Brunello with no influence from small oak. This is a tradionally made wine that allows the sweetness and character of the vintage to show through. Very fresh in the mouth, full bodied with exceptional balance allowing the complex flavors to be tasted. A deft hint of oak shows as this is a new winery using new 400 gallon Slovonian Oak aging casks. This wine can certainly age and it can only show even better a time goes on. Wine Spectator: 94 points…Lazzeretti Brunello di Montalcino 2001. Gorgeous aromas of blackberry, minerals and lightly toasted oak. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a long finish. Best after 2010. 480 cases made. Tanzer: 94 points…($60) Full, bright red. Sexy aromas of raspberry and strawberry liqueur, smoky oak, cinnamon, truffle and woodsy underbrush. Sweet, lush and pliant, with harmonious acids framing and lifting the plum and raspberry fruit flavors. Subtle leather and underbrush notes add nuance. This suave, seamless, fresh wine coats the entire mouth. Finishes with tongue-dusting tannins and intriguing minerality.
